Supermoon

In May 5th, 2012, the biggest and brightest full moon of the year was lighting up the sky as our celestial neighbour passes closer to Earth than usual. It was said that tides are likely to be higher as a result of the supermoon but fears of the spike in crime or an increase in crazy behaviour have been dismissed as pure folklore. I visited Coit Tower in this picture a few years ago, and put some lucky coins in it. When I saw it's picture in website, I was very excited. I could not help to borrow it and put it in our own site.

  1. What a gorgeous moon it was! I had a chance to go out and take some photographs of it, unfortunately it wasn't the clearest of nights here for the best photographs. That is truly an amazing photographs. Random facts about photographs with moons and buildings, they are 9 out of 10 times two different photographs posted together in photoshop. If a photograph of the moon this bright was taken next to a building the building would be dull and barely visible. Cheers

  2. Hi Huian,
I was able to see the moon rising over Queen Anne hill and it was breathtaking. It's funny that your posts mention that people were anticipating events out of the ordinary to occur. I had a pretty interesting night, but I'll just leave it at that... Anyways, it was a beautiful moon.

    1. Hey, Larry:
I lived with my grandma before I was 15 in country side. My grandma was a very superstation woman. Under her education, I became a superstation girl too. She told me a lot of stories about the moon. After moving back to my parents in city side, I was forbidden to believe superstation because my father was a communist, but sometimes I feel some superstations are mysterious and interesting like the sayings about the moon.

  3. Huian, Not to dive into superstition, however many of the police officers I personally know have told me that they experience heightened activity on full moons. I guess I would be interested to know in where you read about there not being a correlation between full moons and heightened activity, whether crime or otherwise. There is been enough proof to demonstrate that a moon effects our physical bodies, simply because the moon affects water tides, and the human being is mostly made up of water. Of course, this is not an area I have researched greatly, but I'd still be interested in your take.

    1. Dear Rebecca, Chinese people have believed for many years in superstitious acts because of the strong belief that certain actions would grant rewards and prosperity. While not everyone still believes in such superstitions, there are those that still firmly consider them. I often read some old stories in Chinese websites even if they might not be true, but they were interesting. I do not remember where I got this story, but I am sure most Chinese people knew about it. There are a lot of superstations about the moon. See below funny sayings:
      1) Seeing a new moon for the first time on a Monday will bring you good luck.

      2) If the first time you, see a new moon is over your right shoulder it is a sign of having fun.

      3) If you happen to be holding something, in both of your hands when you see the new moon for the first time you will never want for anything.

      4) If you see a red moon, it is a sign of war.
Stare at a full moon closely and you will a boy and his bog burning bush.

      5) Another rendition says to use a magnifying glass and look at the full moon and you will see a woman with a dog burning bush.
      6) Some say you can see the man's axe and dog in the moon.

      7) If the moon shines in your face as you lie in the bed at night,
you'll die during the very year.

      8) It is a general belief that it is dangerous to sleep with the moon
shining on the face. If the moon shines on fish, they will spoil.

      9) Horses will be cured of any one of several diseases if you will
insert a bit of silver--a dime is the favorite coin--in the part
affected; but it is imperative that you do this by the light of the
      moon
